Join Guest Curator Vishal Kumaraswamy and exhibiting artists for talks, meals, performances and screenings.
In these free events, artists will investigate ideas of equity and transnational solidarity. Okkoota explores the meeting of minds, bodies, rituals, languages and histories, in the ever-present remnants of the colony.
Curator Tour, Film Screening and Artist Panel – Thur 13 April, 6pm – 8pm
Join Vishal Kumaraswamy and artists Sancintya Mohini Simpson, Kirtika Kain and Eugenia Lim as they reflect and tease apart key questions in their exhibiting works of Okkoota, along with a special screening of the Indigenous futurist film Ningwasum by Subash Thebe Limbu.
Ningwasum is set in an Indigenous Yakthung nation in Nepal. It follows two time-travellers who return to the present from a future where interplanetary civilisations are thriving and living sustainably, having adopted Indigenous knowledges and technologies. Exploring the full potential of language reclamation, the work explores what is possible in a space where Indigenous people can imagine themselves in a future of their own making, driven by their culture and traditions.

Curator Tours and Communal Meals – Sat 15 April and Sat 22 April, 12.30pm – 2.30pm
The core principles that guide the exhibition come from an understanding of how collective presence is negotiated in public spaces through the different senses. After a walk-through conversation of Okkoota, join curator Vishal Kumaraswamy and artist Lara Chamas for ಒಟ್ಟಿಗೆ Ottige (together) – a family style, home cooked meal to nourish the body with hot food and the mind with casual conversation.
Okkoota is part of Arts House’s Equity—Builder where an artist-curator from a marginalised community is handed over the keys, spaces and resources for a curatorial project across two years in an effort to renew the relationship between the institution and independents.
