Inspired by the stunning Papuan choral tradition of Perovetta Anedia (Prophet Songs), pianist and composer Aaron Choulai undertakes an extraordinary cross-cultural musical journey with the 16 voice Tatana Village Choir (PNG) and Melbourne’s hottest young jazz ensemble VADA.
Melding the vibrant Perovetta Anedia song form with modern jazz, We Don’t Dance For No Reason is as unique as Choulai’s Papua/Chinese/Polish/Jewish/Australian upbringing.
Under the musical mentorship of Paul Grabowsky, We Don’t Dance For No Reason (IN NA ASI A MAVARU KAVAMU) explores Aaron’s early life in the Tatana Village before completing his jazz training in Melbourne’s and New York, and recently being named Young Artist of the Year at the 2006 Australian Jazz Awards.
