Join us for a feast for the mind and body – Arts House partners with Contemporary Asian Australian Performance (CAAP) to present a lively evening of food, conversation and Mahjong.
Arts House and Contemporary Asian Australian Performance lift the lid on experimental art-making and queering practice.
Join us for a night of food for thought as James Nguyen leads Asian Australian artists – Harry Lee Shang Lun, Elyas Alavi, Kianna Devine Oricci – through a discussion of risk-taking, community building and queer solidarities. CAAP is also delighted to be introducing their new Artistic Director Tessa Leong on the evening.
This intimate gathering will be a welcoming place to connect with others and explore the ways artists think through their own practice with curiosity and play.
The evening culminates with a game of Mahjong – experienced and first-time players welcome.
James Nguyen makes work from the conversations he has with family and friends. These can become video clips, installations, or long term collaborations with no clear end or resolution.
Kianna Devine Oricci is a choreographer, mentor, performer artist and Mother of House of Dévine based in Naarm.
Harry Lee Shang Lun (李尚倫) is an anti-disciplinary artist with interests in ecological economics, technology ethics, and bouldering.
Elyas Alavi is a visual artist, curator and poet whose work sits at the complex intersections of race, displacement, gender, religion, and sexuality.
About the artists
James Nguyen makes work from the conversations he has with family and friends. These can become video clips, installations, or long term collaborations with no clear end or resolution. Ranging from the diasporic absurd, to distributive and collective risk, anything is up for discussion. By building up a hefty folio of institutionally endorsed degrees, certificates, and accreditations, James continues to validate his worth as a contemporary artist to national funding bodies. Currently working on projects for ACCA and the MCA, James has presented both successful and lacklustre exhibitions all over the world.

About CAAP Longhouse
In some traditional societies, the longhouse is a meeting place where people gather to make plans, pass on their skills and share stories. Longhouse is Contemporary Asian Australian Performance’s networking and information sharing program, aimed at building the Asian Australian professional performance community. Established in 2015, this semi-regular program of events combines insightful and inspiring one hour talks, workshops or performances followed by an hour of networking refreshments.
