CultureLAB X Western Edge

For this partnership, Arts House and Western Edge invited artists (18-30) from Melbourne’s West working in theatre or contemporary performance to apply to create new work, at any stage of development. This opportunity will serve as a pipeline for young artists at pivotal transitory stages of their practice.
As Arts House and Western Edge consider their contexts in the broader ecology, this is an opportunity for us working in the inner and outer West to collaborate on creating pathways for young artists and support the development of next generation independent practitioners.
Arts House will provide:
- Up to $20,000 fee contribution
- Dedicated studio time between 2 and 5 weeks duration
- Technical equipment and production support
- Creative producing support where appropriate
- Collective workshopping and gathering moments hosted by artistic peers and cultural leaders
- Follow-up artist care session post-development with a QTPOC counsellor
Western Edge will provide:
- Two dramaturgical sessions with Stephen Niccolazo and John Marc Desengano, Western Edge, co-Artistic Directors
- Two writing sessions / script development with Chanella Macri, Western Edge Co-Artistic Director
- Work in progress showing co-hosted at Arts House
- Network building through Western Edge’s artistic and curatorial communities
- Opportunity to host or be interviewed on Western Edge’s LiveStream platform to discuss your process in depth with other likeminded artists and peers

Western Edge is a performing arts organisation with the goal of creating a thriving community of next generation artistic and cultural leaders borne from Melbourne’s West, one of the most multicultural and fastest-growing areas with the highest proportion of young people in Australia. Using the principles of intersectionality, cultural safety and accessibility, Western Edge creates outstanding artistic outcomes in collaboration with culturally diverse young artists and their communities. Our work has multiple outcomes: creating space for young artists to explore creativity and new artistic practices, network with artistic peers and industry mentors, have opportunities for training and employment, develop leadership skills and strengthen local communities. Since 2005, Western Edge has delivered over 150 programs, from annual in-school residencies and community youth theatre projects to major creative collaborations with First Nations elders to residency programs with mainstage arts organisations such as Malthouse Theatre and Arts Centre Melbourne.
Western Edge is currently situated in Bunurong Country, but we work across Wurundjeri, Bunurong and Wadawurrung lands.
