Radical healing as resistance and the culture of public dance in a time of social distancing – our second Artist Session will take you to fascinating new places.
Join us for the second in our Makeshift Publics Artist Sessions series. In this session, 2021 cohort members Efren Pamilacan and Ruth Nyaruot Ruach are hosted by Makeshift Publics facilitator Madeleine Flynn.
Dance-maker and independent producer Efren Pamilacan presents Cypher Culture, where he explores the cultural dynamics within social and street dance communities in Naarm, and discusses how those complex relationships have undergone change as public space itself has been redefined over the last two years.
Curator and multi-disciplinary artist Ruth Nyaruot Ruach will offer a talk called The Many Faces that deconstructs the existing imaginations around African identity and expands on the ways the artist uses radical healing as a practice of resistance.
These talks will be followed by a Q&A.
About the Artists
As a dancer and dance-maker, Efren is a member of Jigsaw Sneakers, director of 9DIMES dance, founder of City Sessions and co-founder of Cypher Culture. As an independent producer, he is currently supporting independent artists/collectives Lay the Mystic, Filipino contemporary arts collective Saluhan, and House of Dévine.
Efren has a Master of Arts (Art in Public Space) and is currently assisting with the integration of Street Dance forms into VCA Dance. In addition, Efren is the Youth Arts Coordinator at L2R Dance, a not-for-profit organisation providing free dance workshops and mentoring to young people in the west.
Ruth Nyaruot Ruach is a South-Sudanese cultural curator and multidisciplinary artist who uses art to heal, explore her surroundings, and create comfort within her blackness. Ruth’s art explores the experiences of being an African of the diaspora, and she is strongly influenced by decolonizing language, tone, and the cultivation of shared perspectives in place of assimilation.
Madeleine Flynn is an Australian artist who creates unexpected situations for listening. She has a long term collaborative practice with Tim Humphrey. Their work is driven by a curiosity and questioning about listening, site and ecologies and seeks to evolve and engage with new processes, technologies and audiences, through public and participative interventions. Their highly awarded practice intertwines local, national and international relationships. They are in high demand as creative collaborators across artforms and industries. Recent commissions include Witness Stand for Perth International Arts Festival and Homus Nouvus Latvia, relay//country remembers her names for MONAFOMA, and how much time do we have? for the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art. New things bubbling away with the Science Gallery and ArtsHouse Melbourne, Scottish Sculpture Workshop, TPAC Taiwan and the Kinosaki International Arts Centre, Japan.
They continue to stay connected to their art kin. They are based in Naarm/Melbourne. Their work is documented at http://madeleineandtim.nethttp://madeleineandtim.net
