Two artists converse about the murky reality that lies behind the romantic notion of the art collective.
Many in the art world see now as a pivotal moment for collectives, but the dynamics within collectives themselves can be as unbalanced and inequitable as the larger ecosystem of art.
In this interactive conversation, two practitioners with a personal history of working in collectives (Hyphenated Projects and New Wayfinders) will share what lies behind the romantic notion of collectives, and consider the nuances between different models. They hope to explore with the audience themes of visibility, language, access, friendship and the pitfalls of collectives within colonial and capitalist structures.
While this conversation plays out, audiences will be free to comment and question anonymously via a collaborative text document.
Before you join the conversation, you’ll be gently asked to remove your rose-tinted glasses, in a search for hope – if not quite solutions – in a type of collectivity not branded for consumption.
