Makeshift Workshop by Matthew Stegh, Justin Shoulder, Luna Aquatica and more

The club is not a neutral space.

This Makeshift Workshop will open up the ecology of clubs for investigation, asking how design choices, imaginative leaps and the questioning of convention can create new opportunities for queer club goers to express their own creativity.

Event makers, artists, performers, costume-makers, club kids and creatures are invited to share in this experiment, where participants will learn skills to create architectural interventions such as soft sculpture, inflatables, textiles and wearables. As a collective this group will contribute to the creation of a club event as part of Arts House’s Refuge program.

Who is it for?
We are committed to equality of opportunity and diverse candidates are encouraged to apply. While we welcome artists from a variety of disciplines, this workshop is specifically geared towards artists working within queer nightlife.

We invite queer artists interested in club ecologies: event makers, artists, performers, costume-makers, club kids and creatures. There will be a lot of hands-on making.

How to Apply
This Makeshift Workshop can support up to 10 participants. It is important that participants can commit to attend all three days. Participants are provided with a $300 stipend and lunch each day.

Lead Makeshift artists determine the application and selection process for participating artists.

– Provide a short biography of your practice/interests. No pressure to be academic.
– What does the queer club mean to you?
– What do you want to get out of this workshop?

About the Artists

Matthew Stegh & Justin Shoulder
Matt and Justin have been co-creating events and performance for the past 10 years. They facilitate the annual Monsta Gras Sydney, Pink Bubble and Club Ate (with Bhenji Ra). Stegh is an interdisciplinary artist who has worked in the entertainment and arts industries for the past 20 years. His extensive experience includes fashion, costume and set design, styling and art direction. Stegh’s fashion label Haus of Hellmutti focuses on queer identities, ethical production and salvaged materials. Justin Shoulder is an artist working in performance, sculpture and video. His main body of work, Phasmahammer, is an ecology of alter personas based on queered ancestral Filipinx myth.
